Tank

A tank is a tracked, wheeled or hover armored fighting vehicle which combines mobility and tactical offensive and defensive capabilities. Firepower is normally provided by a large-caliber main gun on a rotating turret and secondary machine guns or missiles, while heavy armor and all-terrain mobility provide protection for the tank and its crew.

Tanks lack the flexability of mechs and tend to be harder to field. Some players use tanks to fill in BV gaps or provide a specific function such as an Arrow IV launcher. Ton for ton, a Battlemech will typically defeat tanks, but tanks are useful to provide support.

Clans typically do not use many tanks. Out of all clan units, only a small handful are Tank based units. The inner sphere, on the other hand, tends to field more.

[edit] Tank Design

Tanks differ from BattleMechs in several key ways. The first is height- tanks have a height of one, and fire from ground level. Mechs have a height of two and fire from level one.

Tanks also interact with terrain differently, depending on the type of propulsion (hover, wheeled, tracked).

Some tanks have more mobility than mechs- the fastest tanks are faster than the fastest mechs. This makes tanks the fastest units on the battlefield.

[edit] Invasion3042 Details

Tanks are one of the newer units in the game- they were added after BattleMechs. Unlike mechs, the blueprints cannot be purchased from Comstar. Instead, each blueprint must be individually researched. Tanks have a disproportionately high maintenence rate to prevent empires from fielding large numbers of tanks or tank-only armies.
