Research Points (RP) are spent to advance an empire's technology base.

The following buildings create RP jobs:

Ultra Basic Research Facility (2 jobs / build spot)

Basic Research Facility (5 jobs / build spot)

Intermediate Research Facility (15 jobs / build spot)

Advanced Research Facility (35 jobs / build spot)

Reserach Institute Facility (100 jobs / build spot)

RP are vital to a new empire, as they are used to develop higher level, more compact buildings that make more efficient use of the available space. They are also necessary to research the Planetary Command Centers needed to gain additional sectors.

Research buildings are also some of the most expensive buildings to create. An empire focusing on research will spend a much greater amount of time preparing for its purpose compared to one following another path. On the other hand, once research is completed, it can never be taken away, and empires holding critical technologies wield a fair amount of power.
