The Redback (RB-03) is an 85 ton clan custom assault mech originally specific to Clan Widowmaker.
The Widowmaker Keshik was pleased with the Crimson Blade's basic chassis, but desired a greater effective range with the flexibility to fight equally well in vastly differing terrain and situations. It was back to the drawing board for the scientist caste, who experimented with different pairings of weapons while trying to curb heat generation and keep the payloads within the Crimson Blade's capacity. After many long months working, a configuration emerged that met every design requirement. The resulting precision fire support battlemech, the Redback, closely resembles the Crimson Blade, but the weapons layout is significantly different. Three lasers backed by an ERPPC form the core of the Redback's weapons array, and a targeting computer ties them all together. It has the capability to deliver devastating firepower out to extreme range with terrifying accuracy, and the ability to shrug off withering amounts of damage thanks to 16.5 tons of armor. The Redback is expected to be everything the Widowmaker Keshik asked for and more.

The Redback is, on paper at least, a more effective mech than the Crimson Blade. It has extra range, which can often be a deciding factor in battles, as well as the ability to potentially destroy an enemy mech's head using its ERPPC. However, like its brother it is slow, and not very manoeuveurable. Thin rear armor can be a vital weakness should the Redback ever find enemies behind itself, as it also cannot fire into its rear arc.
