Minimum Range

Minimum Range, often abbreviated to Min, is the distance at which a weapon begins to lose accuracy, usually as a result of an inherent design factor, or through simple physics. For every hex a target is within the minimum range of a weapon, the base to-hit required to hit the target increases by 1, starting with the hex minimum range begins. It is a very important factor to be aware of, as it can help tip the balance of battle in one sides' favour.

Suppose you have a 'mech at 5/4 with a PPC, and you want to attack a target that is at range 3. Assuming there are no movement or heat effects, and there is no woods or other cover between you and the target, you will need to roll a 5 to score a hit (4 base gunnery + 1 for minimum range). If you try to attack a target at range 1 (in other words, directly in front of your unit) using that same PPC, you will need a 7 to score a hit (4 + 3 for minimum range).
