The first true BattleMech chassis was, of course, that used on the Terran Hegemonys pre-Star League Mackie design. Though the Mackies structure was heavier than modern designs, more in line with industrial structure, in fact the techniques that went into its development would lead standard BattleMech internal structure to its apex of weight efficiency in less than forty years time. Researchers redesigned the modern mech internal structure based on a combination of weight and strength. Initially experimenting in lighter tonnage structures over that forty year time period researchers continued to use technological breakthroughs to create newer and heavier structure tonnage designs.
