A Zone is a sub-division of a sector. It is the smallest unit of land that can be controlled by an empire.

Zone Types

There are five zones in a sector, and each zone has a different name. These names are the Capital Zone, the Agricultural Zone, the Plains Zone, the Mining Zone, and the Landing Zone. The first four zones are regions of infrastructure and contain area for building as well as a tactical map where combat can occur. The Landing Zone represents a backwater region of the sector where enemy forces attempt to land from orbit, and consists of only a battlefield.

Buildable Space

The four infrastructure zones differ in the number of build spaces they have available for construction.

Zone Type Building Spaces
Capital 375
Agricultural 500
Plains 400
Mining 300
Landing 0

Differences in Zones

The first Capital Zone created for an empire comes with a few default workers and jobs that take up no build spots. Other than that, there are no economic advantages or disadvantages to any particular zone (i.e. there is no penalty to building farms in the agricultural zone as long as the space is available). Each zone also has a unique tactical map associated with it.

The position of each zone can come into play if a sector is invaded. The Capital Zone is the most secure. It is immune to all mission types except for Invasions, which makes it the safest location to store valuable parts, units, and minerals. In an Invasion, it is only accessible for attack once all three of the Outer Zones have fallen (the Agricultural Zone, the Plains Zone, and the Mining Zone).

The Outer Zones are connected to one another, the Capital Zone, and the Landing Zone. These zones are also susceptible to attack in invasions, raids and theft missions.

The Landing Zone is the front line of battle. Any hostile attack must come through this zone, including recon missions which target this zone explicitly. On the plus side, any successful defense will prevent the enemy from attacking at all until the end of the target's protection period. To put a mech into the landing zone, click the "Send on Patrol" button in the "Move" section of the sector's Zone Map. As no buildings can be built in the landing zone, there can be no mech hangers there, and all units on patrol must pay double military maintenance.
