Artificial Intelligence (AI) is responsible for controlling mechs, vehicles and battle armor that are not being actively piloted by a living person, either the empire owner or a person piloting for them. A player always has the option of transferring control of units to AI.
The AI is nowhere near as flexible or adaptable as a human pilot and as a result of its limitations, can lead to some very costly defeats. Therefore, it is almost always in the best interest of a player to have a human pilot on hand instead of the AI. However the AI is not a complete wash when it comes to usability and serves as a "better then nothing" option.
Amongst these limitations, the AI has difficulty using tanks and battle armor effectively, as the use of these units is still under development. It is also limited in its ability not to exploit terrain properly, as well as being able to bring a unit's weapons into optimal range, and find a proper path through and around buildings. However, the AI is under constant development and testing to make it better.
The AI will also occasionally crash. When this happens, any units being piloted by the AI will no longer move or fire. Players encountering this problem should report it with a help ticket as well as make inquiries in the main chat room. It is generally considered opportunistic and against the spirit of the game to attack the AI-controlled pirates or enter a mission knowing that the AI is down. Penalties have been handed out to players deemed exploiting such downtimes.
